This is a short primer for bizarre kids movie known as Shorts. This movie will be in theaters on August 21st, 2009. The trailer for this film can be found at http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/shorts/
The Plot: Black Falls is your typical suburban neighborhood on the surface and the Thompson's appear to be your typical suburban family. That is until Toby Thompson, an 11-year old with a bully problem, finds a rainbow rock that grants wishes. That's when everything gets very weird. At first the kids use the stone to cause all sorts of trouble but the real danger happens when the stone falls in the hands of grownups that use the wishes to try to rule the world. That's when the kids have to use all their wish powers ranging from little alien ships to giant booger monsters against the power mad grownups lead by James Spader who transforms into some kind of robot. (I did warn you this movie is a little strange.)
Star Power: Most of the kids are going to be new faces but Toby is being played by Jimmy Bennett who has been working in film for a while now and was last seen stealing cars as a young James Kirk. James Spader plays the villain in all his creepy yet cool glory. Jon Cryer (one of the men in the TV show Two and a Half Men) plays Toby's dad who ends up merged with a woman at one point. William H. Macey also has a small role in the film.
Behind the Screen: Robert Rodriguez, who directs this odd movie, is known for making two types of movies. One type are ultra violent action flicks like Desperado and Sin City. The other types are surreal and silly kid movies like the money making franchise Spy Kids. This is of course one of his silly kid movies and by all the odd images I saw in the previews he seems to have out done himself.
What to expect: How do you even sum up all of what you might see in this movie? I watched the trailer three times now and I still don't really know. It's going to be a fun, silly movie that will have a whole lot of crazy things going on in it. Kids are going to most likely love this movie and many adults will end up scratching their heads asking what just happened.
