Movie Primer: I Can Do Bad All by Myself

This is a short primer for Tyler Perry's most recent dram/comedy I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The movie comes out to a theater near you on September 11th. The trailer can be found at http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/icandobadallbymyself/

The Plot: When Madea, by now a pop culture icon, finds three kids in her home trying to break in she sends the kids off to their only relative, their aunt April. The only problem is that April is a hard drinking lounge singer that wants nothing to do with the kids. He views start to change, of course when she finds she might care for the kids after all and is finding herself having feelings for the Mexican immigrant who is helping to raise the kids in order to live in April's basement.

Star Power: Madea might be getting a lot of the screen time on the trailers that are coming out but the star of this movie is academy award nominated actress Taraji Henson. Taraji was nominated for that Oscar last year for her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button but got her big break in the movie Hustle and Flow. Tyler Perry as Madea plays a supporting role as do musicians Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight. The Mexican love interest is played by Adam Rodriguez who most won't know by name but who has been doing small roles in film, TV, commercials and music videos for years.

Behind the Screen: When it comes to behind the screen this movie is mostly a one man show. Tyler Perry not only plays a few roles in the movie. He also directed the film and wrote the screenplay. The movie is in fact an adaptation of an award winning play written by who else, Mr. Perry. Tyler Perry's last movie was Madea Goes to Jail.

What to expect: Tyler Perry seems to have found a winning formula. He makes movies that are fiercely funny, but he doesn't stop there. Under all the jokes are deep, emotional dramas that touch on the themes of loss, redemption, faith and family. Throw in a bit of romance and you have a pretty complex film. If you are one of those folks that assume you just won't understand a Tyler Perry film, you might want to give this one a chance because it looks to be one of his better efforts. Contrary to popular belief his movies have the ability to touch anyone who is looking for a good story and a well made film.
