What an awesome romantic comedy! Abbey ((Katherine Heigl), a radio producer is accustomed to working on her straight laced radio program, and she is a leader in her field. Despite her great work, the station's ratings were not high enough, so they gave her Mike (played by Gerard Butler), the star of a show called the Ugly Truth.
Mike did a great job as a comedian. The only other time I have seen his movies was in 300, so obviously from my standpoint, this was a very different role for him. He played your typical arrogant know-it-all, but of course we discover as time goes on that it is a protection mechanism triggered by past hurts, but of course, Abbey is able to break down those barriers.
Of course, the movie was predictable. They hated each other at the start, and then found some common ground in the middle when they were forced to get along. Then, there were a few misunderstandings that created some tension once they were friends, and by the end of the movie, they are a couple and are in love. There is nothing mind bending or unexpected in the plot
However, most of us gals do not go to a movie like this expecting anything different, so from that standpoint I was happy with how things went. I got what I paid for, and a whole lot of laughs in between.
Some of the highlights of the movie were when Abbey received a gift of vibrating underwear from Mike and she decided to try them on before she went out for dinner. She got caught off guard by her doorbell and did not have time to take them off before heading off to the restaurant. She attempted to entertain a group of colleagues from the office but could barely speak. Of course, the underwear were enabled accidently and Mike tried to hold back his laugher as the group at the table carried on their conversation wondering what all the fuss was about with Abbey.
All in all, I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a few laughs and a light hearted night out. However, I recommend the gals go together to this one – this is definitely a chick flick versus a "first date" kind of movie. Leave the men at home for this one.
